This 34-page short story is an instant masterpiece. The author tells the tale of our time by the use of fable, projecting our woes into a fictitious newly discovered manuscript of Hans Christian Andersen. The story is of an imaginary empire of cultures, living on a large peninsula of a major continent, called Ørop (pronounced: Europe).
Due to a recent historical catastrophe, Ørop has decided to end its identity, open its borders, and welcome those hostile to Ørop's culture and people. Government, media, and the educational establishment all conspire to rob Ørop's people of their cultural and historical heritage, in the name of an idealized unity that is not respected by the invaders. The native people of Ørop outdo one another in their enthusiasm to destroy their heritage.
It may be that fables communicate more easily than essays. I hope that Camus' fable is understood and taken to heart.
